On Sunday, I’m going to a Super Bowl Party. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have to Google it to see what teams were actually playing.
Y’all know I’m watching my calories right now and am working towards some fitness goals of my own. I’ve been dedicated and working hard to stay on track. So, the sound of the word “Party” let alone “Super Bowl Party” can make me cringe with the thought of fried temptation.
You’ve heard the statistic that Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest food consumption day of the year, only behind Thanksgiving. Ouch. I read an article from ABC News HERE stating that Americans will eat at least 2,400 calories during the Super Bowl. WTF?? That’s TWO DAYS worth of my recommended calories.
Don’t get me wrong. I love a good party. And I wouldn’t miss this one for the world. I’ll be there ready to bet on the color of Beyonce’s first outfit (really, we’re betting on that) and the length of the National Anthem (we bet on that, too) and make my selection for the best commercial of the night. But, I’m going into the party with a game plan (pun intended) to stay on my fitness track. Here’s my playbook:
Eat Before I Go: I’ll make sure that I have a sandwich and some fruit before I leave the house. I do NOT want to get to a house with buffalo wings hungry. For a little girl, I can straight demolish some wings. So, I’ll make sure I’m not starving when I get there – making the greasy food look a little less tempting.
Take a Healthy Food Option: This party is a potluck. So, I’m bringing two dishes: salads on a skewer (it’s a Pinterest special HERE) and chocolate dipped cutie oranges. Now, if you haven’t had chocolate dipped cuties, I’m about to rock your world. Take cutie oranges and just dip a little of one edge in some melted milk chocolate. Then put them in the fridge on wax paper to harden. They’re delicious, they satisfy my sweet tooth and they’re not going to break the calorie bank.
BYOB: Ok, this party is BYOB. So, my hubby will pack a cooler of Miller Light. Now, I like a good beer on a hot day, but I’m not a beer fanatic. So, I’ll pop a couple of Diet Cokes in the cooler and maybe a few Bud Select 55s (they’re only 55 calories, basically watered down beer.) So, if I feel like a beer, I have a low calorie option ready. If not, I’ll stick to my Diet Cokes.
Gum: This is a good little trick. I’ll put a pack of gum in my purse. And, if I just start feeling snacky (not hungry, just tempted to keep eating and overeat) I’ll pop a piece in my mouth. If you’re chewing gum, you’re less likely to mindlessly toss back chips.
Guys, it’s not impossible to eat healthy at parties and social settings, but it does take mindfulness and planning. So, go to your Super Bowl parties and cheer for the Broncos or the Panthers (told you I Googled it.) Just remember your goals and what you’re working for. And for the record: I’m betting Beyoncé’s first outfit is black — and that she skips the wings Sunday, too.
Here’s my prop bet sheet for Sunday. Feel free to print out and play along.
