It Happens* (I’m Talking About Pee)

I love all our male readers. Seriously, you guys are awesome.

But today might be a good day for all of you Y chromosome fellows to skip the blog and perhaps go check out a site that’s a little more manly like THIS or THIS.

‘Cause today’s blog is gonna’ get real. Like real real. Today I’m going to address the issue of the weightlifting pee. Yep, you read that right.

I can guarantee every Strongwoman and strength athlete has done it. And if they say they haven’t, they’re probably lying. It’s something that happens to all of us. Babies/no babies, it doesn’t matter – the dribble is an equal opportunity nuisance.
There comes a time when the weight gets heavy enough that it’s going to stress your bladder. The result is a puddle on the floor.
This is such a common occurrence that Crossfit actually released a video about it. VIDEO HERE
First things first – don’t be embarrassed. This just means you’re now moving some real weight.
This is called Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) and it affects millions of strength athletes. SUI is basically caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles. And, when you put sudden pressure on the pelvic floor (hello deadlift, box jumps) that’s when it’s puddle city. Here’s a LINK that explains what’s happening in much more detail. Fair warning: there are lots pictures and diagrams.
Listen guys, the car deadlift is the worst offender here. And I hear a lot of women complain about the jump ropes and box jumps. Everyone handles the puddle their own way. Some just laugh it off. Others turn beet red and hide with embarrassment.

Want to know how I handle it? I have a secret: I found some magic panties. (Queue the angels singing.) Dear Kate is a company that makes sports underwear. It’s breathable, wicking material (perfect for any leaks from box jumps and heavy lifting) and it’s cute. Really cute.
Check out the website HERE.
The undies help keep dribbles off the floor and keep you dry. I own the Hazel Sport in about every color. I wear these little cuties for any heavy deadlift sessions just in case. I’m not getting paid to say this – I just think it’s only fair to share this little tip to help my sister Strongwomen out.
Want some really awesome news? Dear Kate has offered a 25% discount code to all Cynthiana Strong readers. Woo hoo! Just enter promo code: Strongwoman25 to get 25% off all orders placed through month end.
As you continue to progress in your weightlifting career, it’s going to happen. The pee puddle is a right of passage. It just means you’re progressing and moving serious weight. Just clean it up and smile because you now truly can call yourself a Strongwoman.

Pee happens.
